Apheresis – a modern method of blood purification
Effective support in many diseases – for better health, greater comfort, and improved quality of life.
What is therapeutic apheresis?
Apheresis is a modern, scientifically validated method of selective blood purification, which allows the removal of harmful substances such as:
- autoantibodies,
- pro-inflammatory cytokines,
- lipoproteins (including LDL and lipoprotein(a)),
- toxins and heavy metals.
This procedure works comprehensively, simultaneously targeting multiple pathological mechanisms.
Therapeutic apheresis has strong anti-inflammatory effects, improves physical and mental performance, detoxifies the body from heavy metals and harmful substances, removes residual medications, enhances the effectiveness of in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, and supports overall longevity.

What methods are used during apheresis?
At Wilmed Hospital, apheresis is performed using two main methods, depending on clinical indications:
DFPP – Double Filtration Plasmapheresis
- Selective blood purification: removes pathogenic substances such as autoantibodies, pro-inflammatory cytokines, lipoproteins, and toxins.
- Closed-circuit procedure: red blood cells and other essential components are immediately returned to the body, while purified plasma is reinfused into the patient’s bloodstream.
- Simultaneous treatment of multiple diseases: various harmful substances can be eliminated in a single procedure.
- Safe and precise: performed using sterile, single-use filters with appropriately sized pores.
Hemoperfusion
- Used in severe inflammatory states, sepsis, poisoning, kidney or liver failure, and acute metabolic diseases.
- In hemoperfusion, the entire blood passes through a special adsorption cartridge, which removes toxins, inflammatory mediators, excess drugs, bilirubin, β2-microglobulin, parathyroid hormone, and other harmful substances.
- This method allows rapid and effective purification of blood from toxins, with minimal burden on the patient’s body.
Both methods are safe, effective, and comply with international guidelines in the United States (ASFA Guidelines), Germany (Standard of Therapeutic Apheresis, DGfN), Japan (Japanese Society for Apheresis Guidelines), and other countries, confirming their established clinical value and international acceptance.
The choice of a specific procedure depends on the patient’s health condition and therapeutic goal.

How is a therapeutic apheresis procedure performed?
DFPP – Double Filtration Plasmapheresis
- Installation of a sterile filter set.
- Administration of an anticoagulant (e.g., heparin).
- Blood collection – the first filter separates red blood cells, which are returned to the patient.
- Plasma flows to the second filter, where autoantibodies, cytokines, lipoproteins, toxins, and heavy metals are removed.
- Purified plasma is returned to the body; the concentrated pathogenic plasma can be sent for diagnostic testing.
Hemoperfusion
- The entire blood passes through an adsorption cartridge, which removes toxins, cytokines, bilirubin, excess drugs, β2-microglobulin, and other harmful substances.
- Used in severe inflammatory states, sepsis, poisoning, and acute kidney, liver, and lung diseases.
Apheresis procedures last 2–3 hours and are painless. In most cases, forearm veins are used for venous access, similar to a standard infusion.
After the procedure, the patient can receive an individualized intravenous vitamin therapy to support regeneration and vitality.
